School’s In Session: New School Vs. Old School SEO
HMG Creative · May 21, 2018
I’m going to pull a dad move and give you a “back in my day” story. I’m not going to talk about how I used to walk uphill both ways in the snow to get to school — thank goodness. But I am going to tell a short story about old school Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how it’s changed dramatically. Back in the day (ok just a few years ago), you used to be able to rank well in search results by following a pretty simple formula:
- Pick the one term you want to rank well.
- Put that exact term into the meta page title and description as well as meta keywords.
- For good measure, add that term into your page URL.
- Make sure to add it to the actual title of the page, and then squeeze that exact term into the page a few more times (ok, as much as you can).
- Worry more about getting the keyword in there for search engines and don’t worry so much about readability for the user.
- Buy a few cheap backlinks.
Bingo, bango – good search rankings for that keyword.
New School SEO Has Changed the Game
Fast forward to today and things have changed — dramatically. To help illustrate this, we have put together a quick summary that compares old school SEO strategy to today’s standards:
Let’s dig into each of these a bit more:
The Keys to SEO Results Today:
-
Incorporate more semantically related search terms.
You can no longer just focus on one term and stuff that into your page. You have to use your focus keyword, related keywords and then secondary related keywords. Don’t focus and get stuck on one single term. Pick a topic, and then build in content throughout your page and your site that incorporates a variety of terms tied to that topic. Here is a great chart from Moz.com that illustrates this in action:

Why Traditional SEO Isn’t Enough Anymore
Brad Smith · Jan 8, 2026
in zero clicks, up from 24 percent the year before. For problem-solving searches, that number climbs above 70 percent. People are no longer exploring links; they are consuming summarized answers.
The same shift is happening beyond Google. ChatGPT, Gemini, and other large language models generate direct, conversational responses drawn from a variety of websites. Instead of visiting one page at a time, users now expect to get what they need in one place.
Why Traditional SEO Alone No Longer Works
Search is still about visibility, but the rules have changed. Traditional SEO focuses on ranking signals such as keywords, backlinks, and metadata. AI-driven systems look for context, clarity, and credibility.
There are three main reasons old-school SEO is losing impact:
1. Declining Click-Through Rates
Even when your site ranks on page one, AI summaries often appear above it. Pew Research found that when an AI overview is present, users click traditional results only 8 percent of the time, compared to 15 percent when no overview appears. That’s nearly a 50 percent decline in organic traffic.
2. Lack of Trust Signals
Search algorithms now prioritize expertise and trustworthiness. Sites with inconsistent information, outdated content, or a lack of clear authorship struggle to rank and are less likely to be cited in AI-generated answers.
3. Overemphasis on Keywords
Stuffing pages with keywords used to work. Today, it confuses AI models that value natural, conversational language. Search engines and AI both look for context and meaning, not repetition.

Rethinking Your KPIs: How to Measure Success in an AI World
Brad Smith · Jan 8, 2026
If you’ve noticed your website analytics looking different lately, you’re not alone. The old SEO metrics that marketers have relied on for years—rankings, impressions, and clicks—don’t tell the full story anymore.
Artificial intelligence is changing how people find and consume information. Many users are now getting their answers directly from AI tools or Google’s AI Overviews instead of visiting a website. That means fewer clicks, but not necessarily fewer opportunities.
In today’s world, success isn’t just about traffic. It’s about visibility, influence, and trust across new digital touchpoints.
Let’s look at what that means and how to start measuring it.
Why Traditional SEO Metrics Fall Short
For decades, SEO performance was measured by a few key numbers: organic traffic, keyword rankings, and click-through rates. These were simple, consistent, and tied directly to website visits.
But AI-driven search has changed that.
When users ask ChatGPT, Google, or Bing Copilot a question, they often receive an AI-generated summary instead of a list of links. If your content helps inform that summary but the user never clicks through, traditional analytics tools won’t capture your contribution.
In other words, your content may be influencing decisions—without ever showing up in your website data.
The New Definition of Visibility
Visibility today is multi-layered. It includes how often your brand appears, is referenced, or is cited in AI-generated responses, snippets, and summaries—even if no one clicks.
Think of it as brand awareness inside AI systems. The goal is to make your business part of the answers that people see, hear, and trust.
That means tracking presence, not just performance.
